 Rich & Visible History

With a history that’s believed to be dated back to 2,000 B.C., Guatemala is full of stories. The original Mayan ruins in Tikal are a popular spot to climb some of the oldest structures in the Americas, and the indigenous populations are still a vital and thriving part of the culture. As a matter of fact, there are over 20 languages spoken here.

Mix of Architecture

Guatemala was conquered by the Spanish in the early 1500s and the Spanish colonial city of Antigua is a great place for travelers to learn a bit more history and pass through well-preserved Spanish architecture. Tour fountains, baroque churches, and colonial ruins to see the mix of indigenous and Spanish influence in the country area.

Luxurious Lakes & Beaches

From deep blue lakes surrounded by lush jungles and towering volcanoes, to black sand beaches, the secret of Guatemala lies in these simple but luxurious spots. Take a motor boat from Panajechel across Lake Atitlán for a morning dive and climb up to the sunset view before dinner. You may even spot a few tropical birds!

Restriction-Free Volcanoes & Mountains

Pack enough water and a hefty amount of bravery to hike through Guatemala’s mountain ranges and active volcanoes. Unlike other Central American countries, there aren’t as many government restrictions regarding when you can and cannot hike these unpredictable lava pits. Roasting a marshmallow over smoking black coals will be a truly unforgettable experience!

Stunning Textiles

The strong indigenous population in Guatemala has done well to preserve so many of its customs. Hand-woven textiles used primarily for clothing (called huipiles) are some of the most vibrant and stunning works of art native to the country. If you look closely you’ll notice that each indigenous group has their own style of dress. People groups closer to lakes, for example, will generally incorporate more blues into their patterns.

Fresh Food

Though you may not be interested in the pigs’ feet or chicken heads, you’ll fall in love with the spread at a Guatemalan market. Sink your teeth into a fresh mango and watch the juice run down your arms. Spoon another helping of pepián stew onto your plate at lunch. Snag an extra fresh corn tortilla for the road. And do your best to tame your cravings on the way home.

Award-Winning Coffee

You’ve seen “Guatemalan Roast” on the cover of coffee bags, but have you ever been to the source? Coffee is one of Guatemala’s primary exports and it’s some of the best in the world. Head on over to a coffee farm to hear from the farmers themselves and understand what it takes to get you that steaming cup of joe.

Perfect Proximity

No need to take three flights or spend eight hours in the air. You don't have to travel that far for adventure. Just a quick flight or two will get you started on the journey. Oh, and the country isn't too big so you can see a lot without having to go too far.

Authenticity

Because Guatemala hasn’t put as much focus on tourism as places like Costa Rica, it’s generally pretty easy to get around and dive into a number of authentic, local experiences. It’s rare to be surrounded by tourists unless you’re lining up to see the Mayan ruins.

People

The Guatemalan people are gentle, kind, generous, and impressionably hospitable. They’re proud of their country and delighted to share it. Do your best to whip out those Spanish phrases you learned in high school when speaking with tour guides, boat drivers, artisans, and farmers. Or, a bit of humility and a smile also go a long way!
